    Oil and wax on board

This simple image of a daisy is created by setting fire to the paint.

In a unique process, the paint mixture is literally set alight on the canvas. Flames carefully sculpted to create the atmospheric tone and shading, molten paint providing vitality and movement.

The final painting is dynamic and expressive.

Here the molten paint has created a sense of fluidity to the flower, almost as if it has fallen like rain from the skies.

Each painting created by fire is by its very nature, unique.

    • Painting with fire is dangerous and unpredictable. That's why I enjoy using it as a creative process. Beeswax, oils and resins are mixed with oil paint and applied warm to the canvas then ignited.

The paint can burn from within a few inches of flame to almost a metre in height. I sculpt the flames and smoke using a compressed air gun, which finally extinguishes the fire.

The end result is a complex mix of wax and oils similar to encaustic painting.  The fire and soot create all the deep tones and shading. The hot molten paint mixture gives the painting movement, depth and a richness of colour.
